RAPHA GENTLEMEN'S RACE [Malaysia]

THE LATEST IN THE DECK'S SERIES OF FILMS FOR CYCLE CLOTHING BRAND RAPHA. THIS TIME WE JOINED 76 RIDERS FROM 11 COUNTRIES FOR THE EPIC, 200KM RAPHA GENTLEMEN'S RACE IN MALAYSIA'S CAMERON HIGHLANDS.

AS TOLD BY RAPHA'S ADAM TAYLOR-CAMPBELL:

The Cameron Highlands has always conjured up stories from my childhood, told to me by my grandfather… stories of explorers delving deep into the dark rain forests in search of glory, the mysterious disappearances of interesting characters often having many conspiracies but often being added to the tiger’s tally. Images of dark and damp mornings, conifer trees engulfed in a thick fog waiting for the sun’s heat to lift the shroud, revealing hills of lush green and terracotta – the tea plantations, strawberry fields and the rich soil that feeds them. The windless baking mid-day heat, so hot that you sweat with every breath and the “out of no where” thunderous showers in the afternoon – nature’s way of cooling down the soaring temperatures.
Well, this years RGR in the Cameron Highlands lived up to my imagination – the night before, it had rained constantly causing some minor landslides, spreading mud, stones and debris across some of the higher mountain side roads. The fog was thick and low but the energy levels and chatter on the start line was high. The 19 teams coming from across the Asia Pacific region were excited and keen to get under way, they’d only just received the route cards and were still trying to comprehend what a 50km descent was going to be like, never mind the idea of 50km climb after 150km.

BEAR GARCIA [UAE]

THE DECK, TOGETHER WITH OUR DUBAI PARTNERS TALKABOUT MEDIA WERE ASKED TO DEVELOP AN IDEA TO SHOWCASE A LUXURY CAR BRAND THROUGHOUT THE GULF REGION. SO WE WENT OUT IN SEARCH OF OFF-BEAT CHARACTERS DOING UNUSUAL THINGS WITH CARS AND FOUND BEAR. 

After customising cars in California for clients including Snoop Dogg, Paris Hilton and Shaquille O'Neil, Bear moved to the UAE and now transforms luxury cars for sheikhs and other wealthy Dubai residents. He finds many of his cars abandoned in the desert, but it's not unusual for him to take his angle grinder to a brand new Ferrari within an hour of it being driven off the showroom floor.

TUDOR - YOUR MINUTE [UAE]

The Deck, together with Dubai partner Talkabout Media were given the task by our creative friends at Mindshare, to develop an idea for a series of films for a luxury watch brand.

The idea of the series was to feature a minute in one person’s life. The minute leading up to a signature moment in time. The minute in a pilot’s day, leading up to the moment of take-off. A minute leading up to the moment a surgeon makes the first incision. A cricket player (or baseball, or tennis) in the minute before they bowl or serve their first ball. You get the idea. 

So we pulled together a crew, packed the cars with a few gallons of sun cream and ventured off-road up near the border with Oman (38°C with no shade) to spend three days shooting a pilot with climber Max Stanley.

Primary filming was on Sony F5 with a big bag of primes and a drone for the fun stuff.

Co-Directed by Jon Moore of The Deck and Jeremy Hollister of New York agency Plus, Destination Unlocked: KL is the first in the agency's new series of branded spots for Le Méridien Hotels and the Starwood Group.

The spot follows new wave bossa nova act Nouvelle Vague as they zoom around on Vespas, unlocking some of Kuala Lumpur's best-kept secrets. An impromptu jamming session with sitar player Kumar Karthigesu and tabla player Prakash Kandasamy, recorded live at Barlai Pudu coffee shop provides the soundtrack.

INSEAD MBA [Singapore]

The Deck has embarked on its latest project - a challenging, long-term documentary production for International Business School INSEAD.

We'll spend the coming year following a group of students, making a film that will attempt to capture the highs, the lows and how they overcome the challenges both on and off campus.

And this time next year, we'll hopefully be celebrating their success in completing one of world's most rewarding MBA courses.

RAPHA [Malaysia]

The Deck heads to central peninsular Malaysia to shoot the latest of our films for cycle clothing brand Rapha.

The Rapha Gentlemen's Race will feature a 200km circuit of the Cameron Highlands: a six-hour ride that will take in historical hill stations, tea plantations and the remote villages of the Orang Asli people.

TELLY AWARDS Winners!

The Deck has won two Silver (top prize) and two Bronze at the 35th Annual Telly Awards.

"Ying's Story" for Yihaodian and Oracle Exadata won the top Silver prize.

"Hasan's Story" for Maldives Police and Oracle Exadata won two Bronze.

The Deck was given the job by DFS, to document the making of the logo for their new T Galleria store in Singapore.

This year we partnered with the students of Singapore's Republic Polytechnic, who helped us produce  almost twenty hours of live, multi-cam coverage over three days.

The event runs in tandem with Digital and Music Matters and attracts bands from 60 countries worldwide.
